You can use tracing paper to work what order of rotational symmetry a shape or pattern has.

Trace around the shape.

Rotate the tracing paper. Every time the tracing parer is the same as the shape this counts as 1.

A square has rotational symmetry order of 4. There are for different rotations of the shape that are exactly the same as the original shape. The starting position also counts as 1 so all shapes have at least a rotational order of 1.

Remember where the 'X' started so that you do not count the same postion twice.
