To find the fraction of a shape or pattern work out how many pieces the whole is split into. This is the denominator.

Next, work out how many pieces are what you are looking for. In this example these are the coloured in pieces. This is the numerator.

It is good practice to simplify this answer but you do not have to in this exercise.

The denominator will not always be as simple as it looks. In this example the denominator could be the number of hexagons or the number of half hexagons. It will depend on how many are coloured in.
