A mixed number has a whole number and a fraction. For example: 5 3/5 has 5 wholes and 3 fifths.

An improper fraction does not have any whole numbers. Instead its numerator is equal to or larger than its denominator. For example: 28/5

To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction use the denominator of the mixed number. Add this number together as many times as the whole number. Add on the numerator from the fraction.

Example:

To convert 3 3/5 to an improper fraction.

5 + 5 + 5 = 15 (3 wholes = 15 fifths).

Add on the 3 from the fraction. 15 + 3 = 18.

3 3/5 = 18/5 This is the answer.
