The numerator is the top number, the denominator is the bottom number.

The numerator shows how many pieces you are concerned with.

The denominator shows how many pieces the whole thing is split into.

Fractions with different denominators can be equal to each other. Fractions are shown here as wedges of a circle. Change the fractions on the blue and red circle to see which ones are the same. If the size of the wedges are exactly equal then the fractions are also equal. You might need to rotate the blue circle to align the fractions.

12 is equal to 24.

14 is equal to 28

34 is equal to 68
