To find a fraction of an amount you need to split the amount into the number of pieces shown by the denominator.

You then need to use as many of these pieces as are shown by the numerator.

Example:

To find ²/₅ of 35.

Split 35 into 5 pieces by dividing by 5. 35÷5 = 7

The numerator shows you need 2 of these pieces. 2 X 7 = 14. This is the answer.
